13th T-Mobile New Horizons Winners

July 28, 2013 brought the closing of the 13th edition of the T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival. The festival’s Grand Prix went to the Russian production Celestial Wives of the Meadow Mari, directed by Alexey Fedorchenko. The festival was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Celestial Wives of the Meadow Mari Wins Grand Prix

Members of the Main Competition international jury Béla Tarr, Dominga Sotomayor-Castillo, Edgar Pêra, Joanna Kos-Krauze, and Christoph Terhechte awarded the festival Grand Prize and 20,000 euros to the film Celestial Wives of the Meadow Mari (original title: Nebesnye zheny lugovykh mari) by Alexey Fedorchenko.

Audience Award Goes to Płynące wieżowce (Floating Skyscrapers)

This year’s Audience Award went to Płynące wieżowce (Floating Skyscrapers), directed by Tomasz Wasilewski and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. The film screened in Main Competition as one of 13 films from around the world.

FIPRESCI Award for Stranger by the Lake

This was also the fourth time in the festival’s history that international film critics and members of the International Federation of Film Critics presented the FIPRESCI prize. The award went to L’inconnu du lac (Stranger by the Lake), a film directed by Alain Guiraudie. Members of the FIPRESCI jury included Neil Young, István Szathmáry, and Błażej Hrapkowicz.

Sick Birds Die Easy Wins Films on Art International Competition

Members of the Films on Art International Competition jury (Amos Poe, Karol Radziszewski, Ben Russell, Sally Berger, Barbara Pichler) awarded 10,000 euros to Sick Birds Die Easy, directed by Nicholas Fackler.

European Short Film Competition

In the European Short Film Competition, the winner of the award for best documentary was Le jour a vaincu la nuit (The Day Has Conquered the Night), directed by Jean-Gabriel Périot, while the winner of the award for best experimental film was Suchy pion (Dry Standpipe) by Wojciech Bąkowski. Special mention also went to Hollywood Movie, directed by Volker Schreiner. The winning films were selected by jury members Ana Brzezińska, Norman Leto, and Jakub Majmurek.

Polish Short Film Competition

In the Polish Short Film Competition, the winner of the award for best animated film was Ziegenort by Tomasz Popakul. The prize for best documentary went to Matka 24H (Mother 24/7), a film directed by Marcin Janos Krawczyk and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. The award for best fiction film went to Matka (Mother), directed by Łukasz Ostalski. Three films received special mention: Macica (Uterus) by Anna Kosińska, Nasza klątwa (Our Curse) by Tomasz Śliwiński, and Poniedziałek, poniedziałek (Monday, Monday) by Bartosz Białobrzeski and Mateusz Pastewka. The winning films were selected by international jury members Jukka-Pekka Laakso, Fijona Jonuzi, and Laurence Reymon.

Polish Premiere of W imię… (In the Name Of…)

The awards gala at the New Horizons cinema in Wrocław was followed by the Polish premiere screening of W imię… (In the Name Of…), directed by Małgorzata Szumowska and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. The film, which has previously won an award at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival, will be released theatrically in Poland on September 20, 2013.

The 13th edition of the T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival ran from July 18 through July 28, 2013 in Wrocław. The festival was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.
