9th Edition of A l’Est, du Nouveau

The ninth edition of A l’Est, du Nouveau, the only film festival in France dedicated exclusively to films from Central and Eastern Europe, will run from April 11 through April 18 in Mont-Saint-Aignan and Rouen. The festival will open with a screening of Wałęsa. Człowiek z nadziei (Wałęsa. Man of Hope) by Andrzej Wajda.

Special Events and Competition

A screening of Andrzej Wajda’s latest feature will open the A l’Est, du Nouveau festival on April 11. Other special events at the festival include a retrospective of films by Istvan Szabo, who will be a special guest at the festival and will hold a master class. The festival programme also features a master class taught by Stan Neumann, one of this year’s jury members.

Other jury members include journalist Pamela Pianezza and exhibitor Jean Marc Delacruz. The jury will judge the eight films in the competition, one of which is Tomasz Wasilewski’s Płynące wieżowce (Floating Skyscrapers).

Festival Lineup

French audiences will have an opportunity to see over 30 films and meet with filmmakers from Armenia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Kosovo, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Hungary. The festival lineup has been divided into several sections, including ‘Fokus’, dedicated to Gypsy culture, ‘Experiment’, dedicated to precursors of optical synthesis, and ‘Kluk’ for young audiences.

The festival will close on April 18 with an awards ceremony; awards will be presented by the festival’s student jury and professional jury, followed by a screening of Of Snails and Men, directed by Tudor Giurgiu.
