Andrzej Chyra Recognized in Serbia

July 19 brought the close of the 20th European Film Festival in Palić, Serbia. Andrzej Chyra received special mention of the jury for his performance in Małgorzata Szumowska’s feature W imię… (In the Name Of…).

Compelling and Brave Performance

Jury members Srđan Dragojević, Ashley Horner, Markéta Hodouskova, Pamela Pianezza, and Nurgül Yeşilçay recognized Andrzej Chyra for his performance in W imię… (In the Name Of…): “With a unique take on the Catholic Church, Chyra offers one of the most compelling and bravest performances seen in an Eastern film for a decade.”

Another Award for Szumowska’s Film

Małgorzata Szumowska’s W imię… (In the Name Of…) premiered at this year’s Berlin IFF, winning the Teddy award for films on LGBT issues. The film was later awarded at film festivals in Dortmund, Zittau, and Milan.

Polish Presence at 20th EFF

Małgorzata Szumowska’s film was not the only Polish project screening in Main Competition at the 20th European Film Festival in Palić. The lineup of 14 competition films also featured Kongres (The Congress) by Ari Folman, which had premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The ‘Parallels and Encounters’ section of the festival screened Tomasz Wasilewski’s Płynące wieżowce (Floating Skyscrapers). All Polish films screening at the Serbian festival had been co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.
