Award for Jan Kidawa-Błoński

The Silver George Award for Best Director at the 32nd Moscow International Film Festival, which closed today, went to Jan Kidawa-Błoński for his feature Różyczka (Little Rose).

Kidawa-Błoński’s depiction of a dangerous love triangle between an acclaimed writer (Andrzej Seweryn), his beautiful young wife (Magdalena Boczarska, winner of Best Actress Award at the recent 35th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia) and her lover, a secret police agent (Robert Więckiewicz), set in the tumultuous 1960s, found acclaim in the eyes of the Jury, led this year by French director Luc Besson. Różyczka (Little Rose) screened in the Main Competition along with 16 other titles, including the latest film from Spanish director Ventura Pons and The Last Report on Anna by Hungarian director Márta Mészáros.

The Grand Prize of the 32nd Moscow International Film Festival went to the feature Hermano by Marcel Rasquin.

The Main Competition jury members (aside form jury chairman Luc Besson) included Austrian producer Veit Heiduschka, Lithuanian director and director of photography Sharunas Bartas, and two actresses: Catalina Saavedra from Chile and Mariya Mironova from Russia.

Różyczka (Little Rose) by Jan Kidawa-Błoński received the “Golden Lions” Grand Prize for Best Picture at this year’s Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.

Rewers (Reverse) by Borys Lankosz topped Moscow’s Perspectives Competition for film debuts and pictures that set new perspectives in world cinema. A total of nine pictures competed for the Best Film Award in this competition. Poland’s Rewers (Reverse) screened alongside films from various countries, including Sweden, Germany, Russia, the United States, and the Netherlands.

The Perspectives Competition Jury members were: English director John Irvin (chairman of the jury), Russian filmmaker Sergey Ovkharov, and Polish actress Karolina Gruszka.

Borys Lankosz’s Rewers (Reverse) also received the award of the International Federation of Film Societies.

An interesting nod to Poland was featured in the Romanian film Different Mothers by Mihal Ionesco and Tiberiu Iordan, another Main Competition entry. The screenplay of this film was based on an actual episode from the life of Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski that took place during the making of his 1980 documentary Dworzec.
