Awards for Polish Films

Abu Haraz, a film by Maciej Drygas, received the Grand Prize at the Ânûû-Rû Âboro Film Festival in New Caledonia, while at the Al Jazeera Documentary Film Festival in Qatar, Łukasz Żal received the Best Cinematography Award for his work on Lewa połowa twarzy (Left Side of the Face) by Marcin Bortkiewicz, and Bartłomiej Świderski received the Best Director Award for his film Sati.

Grand Prize for Abu Haraz

The Grand Prize for Maciej Drygas’ Abu Haraz at the Ânûû-Rû Âboro Film Festival in New Caledonia marks another in a series of international film awards for this film. Earlier this year, Abu Haraz received the grand prize and FIPRESCI award at the Flahertiana Festival in Perm.

Best Camera Work Award for Łukasz Żal

At the 10th Al Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival in Qatar, which closed on October 26, the jury recognized Łukasz Żal for his camerawork on Lewa połowa twarzy (Left Side of the Face), a Polish documentary directed by Marcin Bortkiewicz. Cinematographer Łukasz Żal is known for his work on Paweł Pawlikowski’s Ida and Aneta Kopacz’s Joanna, which are currently in the running for Academy Award® nominations.

Best Director Award for Bartłomiej Świderski

The Al Jazeera festival also brought a Best Director award for the director of the documentary Sati. Bartłomiej Świderski’s film is the story of Piotr Morawski, who has climbed six of the world’s eight-thousanders and participated in the world’s first winter climb to Shishapangma. Morawski was killed on April 8, 2009 in the Himalayas, on the Dhaulagiri mountain. Sati was also nominated for the grand prize of the festival. The film has previously received awards at film festivals in Italy and Slovakia.

Abu Haraz and Lewa połowa twarzy (Left Side of the Face) were co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.
