Black Nights 2014: Spotlight on Polish Cinema
Over 20 Polish films will be shown at the 18th Black Nights International Film Festival in Tallinn. The event runs from November 14 through November 30, 2014. Polish presence at the festival is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.
Polish films in the lineup
Polish films featured in this year’s Black Nights lineup include Psie Pole (Field of Dogs) by Lech Majewski, Płynące wieżowce (Floating Skyscrapers) by Tomasz Wasilewski, Strefa nagości (Nude Area) by Urszula Antoniak, Obce ciało (Foreign Body) by Krzysztof Zanussi, Ostatnie piętro (The Last Floor) by Tadeusz Król. In Tallin will take place the international premiere of Obywatel (Citizen) by Jerzy Stuhr. In the section dedicated to the classics of the Polish cinema will be presented Potop (The Deluge) by Jerzy Hoffman, Spokój (The Peace) by Krzysztof Kieślowski, Życie rodzinne (Family Life) by Krzysztof Zanussi. Films screening in the festival’s main competition will be judged by a jury that has Polish director Tomasz Wasilewski among its members.
Miasto 44 (Warsaw 44) as Opening Film
The festiwal will be opened with the screening of Miasto 44 (Warsaw 44) by Jan Komasa. The world premiere of the film took place at the 19th Busan Film Festival.
Efekt Domina (The Domino Effect) in Debut Film Competition
Efekt Domina (The Domino Effect) by Elwira Niewiera and Piotr Rosołowski has been selected for screening in the Tridens Baltic Sea and Nordic Debut Film Competition, among other 9 films from the Baltic Sea and Nordic region.
Awards for Polish Filmmakers
During the festival, on November 24, Krzysztof Zanussi will receive the festival’s Special Prize. At the festival’s Closing Gala on November 28, Polish actress Maja Komorowska will receive the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Bruno O’Ya Award
This year will also mark the first edition of the Bruno O’Ya award for an Estonian artist working abroad. The award will be presented at the festival’s Opening Gala by Jacek Fuksiewicz, Advisor to the General Director of the Polish Film Institute on European Affairs.
Other Events
Polish cinema will also enjoy special presence at the festival’s supplementary events, including ‘Animated Dreams,’ a section dedicated to animated films ( two Polish animations: Więź (Side Bond) by Weronika Kuc and Łaźnia (Baths) by Tomasz Ducki will be shown in the international competition), ‘Just Film,’ showcasing films for children and young adults( in the lineup will be shown Obietnica (The Word) by Anna Kazejak, and ‘Sleepwalkers,’ a section for short films. The special focus on Polish cinema in Estonia will create an excellent opportunity to experience Polish culture and meet representatives of the Polish film industry. On November 27, Film Commission Poland will host the Tallinn Industry Days.
