Jacek Lusiński’s Carte Blanche  was released theatrically in Denmark on March 31, 2016. Distribution is handled by Reel Pictures. The film’s Danish title is Professor Bieliks hemmelighed.

Carte Blanche

Inspired by real events, Carte Blanche is the story of a high school teacher who hides the fact that he is slowly losing his eyesight, in order to keep his job and continue prepping his students for finals. Due to a genetic condition, he is at risk of losing his eyesight permanently. At first he is distraught, but quickly decides to hide his medical condition from his superiors. No one but his best friend Wiktor is let in on the secret. While dealing with the new circumstances and new challenges, Kacper befriends a colleague and tries to help a rebellious student, who has a secret of her own.

A Film Inspired by a True Story

“I came across a very touching story in the paper; I immediately pictured the person from that story in my head. I thought it could be a good idea for a movie, not only because of its unusual subject matter, but also in terms of its visual and audio potential,” said writer-director Jacek Lusiński, discussing the moment when he
first learned of the story of Maciej Białek, which served as inspiration for the screenplay of Carte Blanche.

A Film Starring Andrzej Chyra

The lead part is played by Andrzej Chyra. “Despite the main character’s troubles, this is an optimistic story. We follow a protagonist who accomplishes his goal, despite the obstacles. He is able to find the strength necessary to go on in this world, accepting his fate; in these new circumstances, he begins rebuilding himself,” said Andrzeh Chyra at the film’s press conference in Warsaw. The film features supporting performances by Urszula Grabowska, Arkadiusz Jakubik, Dorota Kolak, Eliza Rycembel, and Tomasz Ziętek.

A Film Supported by the Polish Film Institute

Carte Blanche was written and directed by Jacek Lusiński, author of Piksele (Pixels), lensed by Witold Płóciennik, and scored by Paweł Lucewicz. The film was produced by Aurum Film, co-produced by Orange and Lightcraft, and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute and the Lublin Film Fund. Distribution is handled by Kino Świat. Carte Blanche was released theatrically in Poland on January 23, 2015.

Awards

Accolades for Carte Blanche include the Grand Prize at the Shanghai IFF, special mention in Sao Paulo, the audience award at the Wisła Polish Film Festival, the award for Best Sound Effects at the Bluebox festival in Olsztyn, and special mention at the Lubuskie Film Summer. For his performance, Andrzej Chyra received the Elżbieta Czyżewska Best Actor Award at the Polish Film Festival in New York City, special mention at the ‘Bap Cine’ Polish Film Festival in Buenos Aires, and the Best Actor award at the China Golden Rooster & Hundred Flowers Film Festival.
