Three co-productions co-financed by the Polish Film Institute: Ve stinu (In the Shadow) by David Ondříček, Polski film (Polish Movie) by Marek Najbrt, and Konfident (The Confidant) by Juraj Nvota, have been nominated for the 2012 Czech Lions awards.
14 Nominations for David Ondříček’s In the Shadow
Ve stinu (In the Shadow), directed by David Ondříček and made as a co-production between the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia, received nominations for the 2012 Czech Lions awards in a total of 14 categories: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography (Adam Sikora), Best Music Score, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Artistic Accomplishment, the Film Critics’ Award, Best Film Poster, and Best Film award of the kinobox.cz website.
Ve stinu (Polish title: W cieniu, English title: In the Shadow)
The film is set in Prague, 1953. Actor Ivan Trojan plays the part of a police detective investigating one of many burglaries. His investigation is assisted by a specialist from Eastern Germany. Over time, it turns out that this seemingly simple criminal case has in fact a political context. The film’s Polish producer is Centrala. In the Shadow was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.
Recognition from the Czech Film Critics
Earlier this year, In the Shadow received awards of the Association of Czech Film Critics in the following categories: Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Music Score, and Best Cinematography (Adam Sikora).
Nine Nominations for Polski Film
Polski film by Marek Najbrt has been nominated in nine categories: Best Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Music Score, Best Editing, the Film Critics’ Award, and Best Film Poster.
A Film Within a Film
Polski film was made as a co-production between Poland and the Czech Republic. It is the story of a group of former friends who decide to film a movie sequel. In reality, this is merely an excuse to make ‘a film within a film’ and to give audiences a glimpse into the life of the actors – a life that is full of absurdities and always balancing between reality and illusion.
The New Project from Off Plus Camera Winner
The latest film by Marek Najbrt was produced thanks to the director’s success at the 2010 Off Plus Camera festival. One of the elements of his prize was a subsidy of one million PLN towards the making of his next film, provided that the shooting takes place in Poland. Part of the filming took place in Krakow. The film features performances by Polish and Czech actors, including Tomáš Matonoha, Pavel Liška, Josef Polášek, Marek Daniel, Katarzyna Zawadzka, Krzysztof Czeczot, and Marcin Kobierski. Polish Movie has also received recognition at the 47th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
The Confidant Nominated for Best Cinematography
The Confidant, a co-production between Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, directed by Juraj Nvota and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, has been nominated for the 2012 Czech Lions awards in the Best Cinematography category. The film was lensed by Czech cinematographer Jan Malíř.
The Confidant (original title: Eštebák) is set in Czechoslovakia in the late 1960s; it is the story of a young telegraph operator named Adam, who becomes involved in a game against the communist secret police. The Confidant features Maciej Stuhr, as well as a number of Czech and Slovak actors. On the Polish side, the film was produced by Apple Film Production.
Czech Lions
The Czech Lions are the Czech Republic’s equivalent of the Polish Film Awards (Eagles). The jury members are members of the Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA). This year marks the 20th edition of these awards. The 2012 winners will be announced on March 2, 2013.
