Dorota Kobiela on Variety's List of 10 Animators to Watch

Variety has published its selection of ten animators to watch. One of this year’s chosen animators is Dorota Kobiela, co-creator of the painted animation film Loving Vincent.

Kobiela on Variety’s Top Ten List

Variety magazine has just published its “10 Animators to Watch 2017” list. One of this year’s chosen animation artists is Polish animator Dorota Kobiela, director of the feature animated film Loving Vincent.

Graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and recipient of the scholarship of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Also studied directing at Wajda School. Directed a number of short animated films, including Serce na dłoni (2006) and Mały listonosz (Little Postman; 2011), which brought her awards at film festivals in Los Angeles, Liege and Barcelona. Loving Vincent marks her feature-length debut.

Loving Vincent

Loving Vincent is the world’s first fully painted feature film, made by Polish director and painter Dorota Kobiela and Oscar-winner Hugh Welchman (Peter & the Wolf). The film is produced by Academy Award winning production companies BreakThru Films and Trademark Films. Other partners of the project include CETA, Odra Film, Silver Reel, Cinema and Management Group, Wrocław 2016 European Capital of Culture, and the MEDIA programme. The film is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. Its world premiere is set to take place at the Annecy International Film Festival.

Dorota Kobiela is one of a number of Polish filmmakers to be featured on Variety’s lists of filmmakers to watch. Among these are cinematographers (including Jolanta Dylewska, Monika Lenczewska, Adam Sikora, Łukasz Żal, and Ryszard Lenczewski), directors (Wojciech Smarzowski, Borys Lankosz), and actors (Jakub Gierszał).
