FEBRUARY FOCUS ON POLAND IN NYC

Three different events dedicated to Polish cinema will be held in New York City across the month of February.

Spotlight on Andrzej Żuławski

Four films by Andrzej Żuławski will screen at The Film Society of Lincoln Centre on February 19 and 20. The lineup includes the director’s latest film Cosmos, as well as new digital restorations of his earlier works: Diabeł (The Devil), Trzecia część nocy (The Third Part of the Night), and Na srebrnym globie (On the Silver Globe). The event will mark a special appearance by Andrzej Korzyński, who scored Andrzej Żuławski’s films. The spotlight on is a sidebar of the 16th edition of Film Comments Selects. Audiences at this event will also have an opportunity to see Pod elektrycznymi chmurami (Under Electric Clouds), a Russian-Polish-Ukrainian co-production directed by Alexey German Jr., winner of the Silver Bear for Best Cinematography at last year’s Berlinale.

Kino Polska: New Polish Cinema

Kino Polska: New Polish Cinema, a festival of new Polish cinema, will run on February 25 to February 28 at the BAMcinématek. The festival lineup features a selection of latest Polish films, including the award-winning Body/Ciało (Body) by Małgorzata Szumowska and Performer (The Performer) by Maciej Sobieszczański and Łukasz Ronduda, as well as Letnie przesilenie (Summer Solstice) by Michał Rogalski (winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the World Film Festival in Montreal), Czerodziejska góra (The Magic Mountain) by Anca Damian (special mention of the jury in Karlovy Vary), Moje córki krowy (These Daughters of Mine) by Kinga Dębska, and Panie Dulskie (Damaged) by Filip Bajon. General Director of the Polish Film Institute Magdalena Sroka will be a special guest at the festival opening.

Polish Avant-Garde Cinema

An event dedicated to Polish Avant-Garde Cinema will take place on February 18 at the Anthology Film Archives. Audiences will have an opportunity to see a number of avant-garde Polish works, including Przygoda człowieka poczciwego (The Adventure of a Good Citizen, an Irrational Humoresque; 1937) by Franciszka and Stefan Themereson, Kineformy (Kineforms; 1957) by Andrzej Pawłowski, Test I (1971) by Józef Robakowski, Nowa książka (New Book; 1975) by Zbigniew Rybczyński, Stolarza (The Carpenter; 1976) by Wojciech Wiszniewski, Martwy cieć (Dead Shadow; 1980) by Andrzej Klimowski, Blok (Block; 1982) by Hieronim Neumann, and Portret w kropli (Portrait in a Drop of Water; 1997) by Kazimierz Karabasz.

All three events are organized by the Polish Cultural Institute in New York City. The spotlight on Andrzej Żuławski and Kino Polska: New Polish Cinema are both organized in cooperation with the Polish Film Institute.
