The action takes place in the Vitebsk region of Belarus, where poverty creates a depressing contrast to the area's natural beauty. Ada works on a farm with her husband Oleg, but she has a passion: she corresponds with artists and invites them to paint in the open air. The artists often leave their works behind, so she buys a second cottage and displays the paintings in her improvised art gallery. In order to organise the open air festivals, Ada needs help from her neighbours. Their reactions are varied: apathy, distrust, laziness. Free thinking is not welcomed in Belarus, and even an innocent hobby such as painting could be dangerous and requires outstanding heroism.
