"Floating Skyscrapers" in Zurich

Płynące wieżowce (Floating Skyscrapers), a film directed by Tomasz Wasilewski and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, has been selected for screening in the Feature Film Competition at the 9th Zurich International Film Festival, which runs from September 26 through October 6, 2013.

Tomasz Wasilewski’s Płynące wieżowce (Floating Skyscrapers) is one of twelve feature films selected for screening in the festival’s International Feature Film Competition. The Polish film will compete for awards against other festival entries, which include films from Italy, the United Kingdom, Norway, France, and Spain.

Tomasz Wasilewski’s Film

Following his debut feature W sypialni (In a Bedroom), Tomasz Wasilewski’s second film Płynące wieżowce (Floating Skyscrapers) is a contemporary and universal coming-of-age story about the search for one’s identity and acceptance. The film’s main protagonist Kuba is a young man who lives with his mother and his girlfriend Sylwia. At first glance, Kuba’s life may seem to be organized and stable. He loves his girlfriend, he is a college student in physical education, and is considered to be one of the top contenders in the upcoming swimming competition. One night at a party, he meets Michał. A strong emotional bond forms between the two men. Kuba suddenly finds himself fascinated with another man. Terrified of the emotions that have stirred inside him, Kuba cannot find his place in these new circumstances.

A Film Supported by the Polish Film Institute

The film was produced by Alter Ego Pictures, written and directed by Tomasz Wasilewski, and lensed by Jakub Kijowski. The lead part was played by Mateusz Banasiuk, with supporting performances by Katarzyna Herman, Bartosz Gelner, and Marta Nieradkiewicz. Płynące wieżowce (Floating Skyscrapers) was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Theatrical Release on November 22.

Płynące wieżowce (Floating Skyscrapers) had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, later winning the East of the West section of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which showcases films by first- and second-time directors. Most recently, the film celebrated acclaim at the 38th Gdynia Film Festival, winning the Award for Young Directing Talent (Tomasz Wasilewski) and Best Supporting Actress (Marta Nieradkiewicz). The Polish theatrical release is scheduled for November 22, 2013. World sales are handled by the Berlin-based company Films Boutique.
