Poland’s candidate for the Best Foreign Film Academy Award, W ciemności (In Darkness) by Agnieszka Holland, will screen at the 36th Toronto International Film Festival.

Agnieszka Holland’s feature will screen as one of Toronto’s Special Screenings, as will Sponsoring (Elles), the latest film from Małgorzata Szumowska, and Kobieta z piątej dzielnicy (The Woman in the Fifth), the new film from Paweł Pawlikowski.

In Darkness tells the story of a Polish man named Leopold Socha who helps a group of Jewish fugitives from the Lvov ghetto seek refuge in the city’s sewers during the Second World War. Robert Więckiewicz stars as Leopold Socha, with appearances by Agnieszka Grochowska, Kinga Preis, Julia Kijowska, Marcin Bosak, and German actor Benno Fürmann. Jolanta Dylewska, director of Po-lin and acclaimed cinematographer of Tulpan (a film also co-financed by the Polish Film Institute), was In Darkness’ director of photography. The score was written by Antoni Komasa-Łazarkiewicz.

In Darkness, a co-production between Poland, Germany, and Canada, was produced by Zebra Film Studio. The film’s co-producers include Film Works and Schmidtz Katze Filmkollektiv. The film was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute (PISF), and supported by the Łódź Film Fund. Sony Pictures Classics, a company that focuses on the distribution of foreign language films on the US market, bought the rights to Holland’s latest feature in February. The film’s Polish distributor is Kino Świat.

The 36th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival will run from September 8 through September 18, 2011.
