Hot Docs Focus on Poland

The 20th edition of the Hot Docs festival in Toronto will feature a showcase of recent Polish documentaries.

The Hot Docs Festival

Launched in 1993, the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival is the largest documentary film festival in North America. It is organized annually in spring, with film screenings, an international film market and various industry conference events. This year’s edition of the festival runs from April 25 through May 5.

Showcasing Polish Documentaries

One of the key sections of the festival lineup is the ‘Made In’ series, which showcases the latest documentary productions from a selected country or region. Thanks to the efforts of the Krakow Film Foundation, this year the Canadian festival programmers decided to focus on Poland. To date, the festival showcased films from Southeastern Europe (2012), Italy (2011), South America (2010), South Korea (2009), Mexico (2008), Brazil (2007), Japan (2006), South Africa (2004), and Taiwan (2003).

Project Supported by the Polish Film Institute

A detailed programme of screenings in the ‘Made In’ cycle will be announced in March. In addition to this presentation of Polish films and filmmakers, the Toronto festival will also be attended by a group of Polish producers, who will have an opportunity to participate in the Hot Docs Forum, one of the world’s largest industry events dedicated to the production and financing of documentary films. The project is supported by the Polish Film Institute.

The Krakow Film Foundation

The Krakow Film Foundation, responsible for the organization of the annual Krakow Film Festival, also handles the complex promotion of Polish documentary and short films abroad. Polish Docs and Polish Shorts, both supported by the Polish Film Institute, are two projects featuring bilingual websites that serve as a news source and an extensive database of Polish films and filmmakers.

Promoting Polish Films Abroad

The Krakow Film Foundation is present at major industry events, hosting stands at film markets such as Clermot-Ferrand and Annecy. A key element of the promotion strategy networking; the KFF is in touch with directors of key festivals, festival programmers, journalists, and representatives of key film institutions.
