"In Darkness": in Belgian Cinemas

W ciemności (In Darkness), a film directed by Agnieszka Holland and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, will be released in cinemas across Belgium on May 15, 2013.

Gala Premiere on May 7

 

Agnieszka Holland’s W ciemności (In Darkness) will be released in Belgian cinemas on May 15, 2013. The film will screen in Brussels, Antwerp and Genk. Distribution in Belgium is handled by ABC Distribution. The gala premiere screening of In Darkness, attended by the director, will be held on May 7 at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. The event is organized by the Polish Institute in Brussels.

A Polish-German-Canadian Co-Production

W ciemności (In Darkness) was made in co-production between Poland, Germany and Canada. The film tells the story of a Polish man named Leopold Socha, who undergoes a transition from small-time crook to hero during the Second World War. He decides to help a group of Jews from the Lvov ghetto who are hiding in the sewer canals. Risking his own life and the lives of his loved ones, he saves a group of men, women and children from the Holocaust. With Socha’s help, they spend almost 14 months in hiding.

Więckiewicz, Grochowska, Preis

The role of Socha was played by Robert Więckiewicz, with appearances by Agnieszka Grochowska, Kinga Preis, Julia Kijowska, Marcin Bosak, and German actor Benno Fürmann. The film was lensed by Jolanta Dylewska.

W ciemności (In Darkness) was produced by Studio Filmowe Zebra and co-produced by Hidden Films Inc. (Canada) and Schmidtz Katze Filmkollektiv GmbH (Germany). The film was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. Production was also supported by the Łódź Film Fund.

Academy Award® Nomination

In 2011, In Darkness was the Polish candidate for the Academy Awards®, receiving a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
