"In the Shadow" Awarded in Seattle

Ve stinu (Polish title: W cieniu; English title: In the Shadow), a co-production between the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia directed by David Ondříček and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute received an award at the 39th Seattle International Film Festival.

Awards for In the Shadow

At the 39th Seattle Film Festival, David Ondříček received the Golden Space Needle award for Best Director, while the film’s leading man Ivan Trojan received the award for Best Actor.

The Seattle awards mark another addition to a series of recent prizes for In the Shadow. The film has received the 2012 Czech Lions award of the Czech Film Academy in nine categories: Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor (Ivan Trojan), Best Score, Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Production Design, and Best Photography. In the Shadow also received awards of the Czech Film Critics Association in the following categories: Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Score, and Best Photography.

The film is set in Prague in 1953. Actor Ivan Trojan plays the role of a police detective investigating one of many burglaries. In his investigation, he is assisted by a specialist from East Germany. Over time, this seemingly simple criminal case gains a political context.

Co-Production Supported by the Polish Film Institute

Ve stinu (In the Shadow) was made as a co-production between the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia, and directed by David Ondříček (Loners; One Hand Can’t Clap). The film’s producer on the Polish side is Centrala Sp. z o.o. In the Shadow was lensed by Adam Sikora and filmed partly in Poland – in Lower Silesia and in Łódź. Post-production was handled by Alvernia Studios. The film was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute and by the Regional Film Funds in Wrocław, Krakow, and Łódź.

Theatrical Release on June 21

The film will be released theatrically in Poland on June 21, 2013. Distribution is handled by Hagi Film.
