Lokatorki (Tenants) in Contention for Student Oscars

The Student Academy Awards are presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to the best student films in the following categories: best animated, documentary, feature, alternative, and foreign film. Winners are eligible for an Academy Award nomination. This year, over 1700 films were submitted for consideration. Only 5 percent of these (about 80 films) were selected for the semi-finals. The list of films competing for the Student Academy Awards was announced on August 2. Klara Kochańska’s Lokatorki (Tenants) is one of seven films selected in the foreign film category.

Lokatorki (Tenants) is the story of Justyna, a single woman in her thirties, who buys an apartment at a bailiff auction, despite the inherent risk. On the day she chooses to move into her dream home, it turns out that the keys don’t work and Justyna cannot enter her apartment. Sometimes dreams can easily turn into nightmares.

The film has previously received acclaim at the Warsaw Film Festival, winning its Grand Prize, and at the Global Chinese Universities Student Film and TV Festival, winning the award for best foreign film. Most recently, the film screened within the framework of the Future Frames programme at the 51st Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. In July, Lokatorki (Tenants) received the Grand Jury Prize at the FIRST International Film Festival in China.

The complete list of Student Academy Award nominees is available on the Academy website. The awards ceremony will take place on September 22.
