New Project by Klimkiewicz

March on the Chilean island of Chiloé will bring the launch of filming of The Time Before, a new short film by Katarzyna Klimkiewicz (European Film Award winning Hanoi-Warszawa / Hanoi-Warsaw, Flying Blind) and Dominga Sotomayor, winner of the Golden Tiger Award at the Rotterdam IFF and the Grand Prize of the 12th T-Mobile New Horizons IFF.

International Co-Production

The Time Before is being produced within the framework of DOX:LAB, an intercultural programme of Denmark’s CPH:DOX festival launched in 2009, which enables the joint production of films by directors from Europe and from other parts of the world. This short film was inspired by a poem by Wisława Szymborska entitled “Wypadek drogowy”, as well as Sotomayor’s personal experience. The film features a cast of non-professional actors and will be lensed by Inti Briones, a Peruvian-born cinematographer based in Chile who is fascinated with European cinema and has collaborated with José Luis Torres Leivanand Julia Loktev.

Premiere at CPH:DOX

The story is about a single day on the Chiloe island. The opening scene shows a tragic road accident. Meanwhile a family gathers for dinner in their summer house, along with friends and neighbours. The only person missing from the table is Jaime, the eldest son of the hostess. The whole dinner party decides they won’t wait for him. They spread out along the island in the heat of the day, not suspecting that they will never see him again.

The Time Before will premiere at the CPH:DOX festival in Copenhagen in November 2013.

The film is produced by Rebeca Gutiérrez (Cinestacion Ltda., Chile) and Jan Naszewski (New Europe Film Sales, Poland).

Crowdfunding

The film’s budget is set at 35,000 EUR, of which 15,000 EUR has been raised to date (half of those funds come from the Polish Film Institute). The producers are also raising funds through crowdfunding.
