"SUMMER SOLSTICE" IN MONTREAL OFFICIAL SELECTION

Letnie przesilenie (Summer Solstice), a film directed by Michał Rogalski and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, will screen in Main Competition at the 39th World Film Festival in Montreal. The Montreal screening will mark the film’s world premiere.

Michał Rogalski’s feature Letnie przesilenie (Summer Solstice), co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, will screen in Main Competition at the 39th World Film Festival in Montreal. The Montreal screening will mark the film’s world premiere. This year’s competition lineup feature 26 films from 31 countries. In recent years, several Polish films co-financed by the Polish Film Institute have screened in Main Competition at the World Film Festival in Montreal, including Chce się żyć (Life Feels Good) by Maciej Pieprzyca (2013; Grand Prize), Obława (Manhunt) by Marcin Krzyształowicz (2012), Kret (The Mole) by Rafael Lewandowski (2011; Best Actor Award for Borys Szyc), Czarny czwartek (Black Thursday) by Antoni Krauze (2011; FIPRESCI award), Wenecja (Venice) by Jan Jakub Kolski (2010; Special Jury Prize), and Jestem twój (I Am Yours) by Mariusz Grzegorzek (2009).

Romek and Guido are 17 years old and have their whole lives ahead of them. Their dreams are no different from those of other teenage boys — they want to listen to music, dance the swing, date girls. If they had met under any other circumstances, they might have become best friends. Unfortunately they meet in 1943. Guido is a member of the Nazi military police, stationed in rural Poland. Romek is helping his single mother, working as a railwayman’s helper. One day the events that up until then had served as the backdrop begin to catch up with them, brutally forcing their way into their lives. Responsibilities take centre stage, while fear takes away everything that had previously brought them joy.

Polish-German Co-Production Supported by the Polish Film Institute

The film was written and directed by Michał Rogalski, and lensed by Jerzy Zieliński. Letnie przesilenie (Summer Solstice) was produced by Prasa i Film (Poland) and Sunday Filmproduktion GmbH (Germany), co-produced by TVP, WFDiF, Odra-Film, Studio Produkcyjne Orka, Mafilm, RBB – Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg, and Synchron- und Tonstudio Leipzig, and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM), Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB), Deutscher Filmförderfonds (DFFF), and Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA). World sales are handled by Wide Management.

The film stars Filip Piotrowicz, Jonas Nay and Urszula Bogucka, with supporting performances by Bartłomiej Topa, Agnieszka Krukówna, Maria Semotiuk, Gerdy Zint, and Krzysztof Czeczot.

Polish Films in ‘Focus on World Cinema’ Section

The ‘Focus on World Cinema’ non-competitive section of the festival will feature three feature films co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. The audience will be able to see Chemia (Chemo), the directing debut of acclaimed cinematographer Bartek Prokopowicz, Bogowie (Gods) by Łukasz Palkowski and Hiszpanka (Influenz) by Łukasz Barczyk. The section dedicated to the short films will feature Fatum by Radek Pietruczuk. The film is the only Polish short which will screen this year at the festival in Montreal.

Letnie przesilenie (Summer Solstice), Chemia (Chemo) and Hiszpanka (Influenz) are also in official selection at the 40th Gdynia Film Festival.

World Film Festival in Montreal

The World Film Festival in Montreal is the only international competitive feature film festival in North America accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF). The festival aims to support the development of world cinema by encouraging cultural diversity and by promoting first-time filmmakers and innovative works.

The 39th World Film Festival in Montreal runs from August 27 through September 7, 2015.
