13th FIPRESCI Warsaw Critics Project

Applications are now welcome for the 13th FIPRESCI Warsaw Critics Project – a training programme for young critics and film journalists from Central and Eastern Europe coordinated by the Warsaw Film Foundation and FIPRESCI, the International Federation of Film Critics.

Workshop will be held during the 34th Warsaw Film Festival between 12 and 21 October 2018. A group of young critics will be invited to the festival and have a unique opportunity to take part in one of the most prestigeous film events in the region, meeting high-profile film professionals and contributing to the deliberation meeting that decides which film is awarded by the festival’s FIPRESCI jury.

Selected works of the participants will also be published on Ioncinema website.

The FIPRESCI Warsaw Critics Project is devised and coordinated by a Bulgarian writer, researcher and programmer based in Paris – Yoana Pavlova and Italian critic Tommaso Tocci. Both are experienced industry professionals and members of FIPRESCI.

Yoana is a founder and contributing editor of Festivalists.com and has contributed to many outlets in English, French and Bulgarian. Her most frequent cooperations include The Calvert Journal, Fandor’s Keyframe, Vague Visages, Kino Magazine, East European Film Bulletin and AltCine. She has also contributed to three books: Cinemas of Paris (2016, St Andrews Film Studies), Eastern Promises (2014, Festival Internacional de Cine de Donostia – San Sebastián) and The Bulgarian Nouvelle Vague (2012, Edno).

Tommaso has so far contributed to various publications on cinema, including Indiewire, RogerEbert.com, CinemaScope, Filmkrant and Ioncinema.

Under their guidance, participants will be covering the festival and industry events, delivering film reviews and conducting interviews with directors and filmmakers. They will be encouraged to use their own initiative and will receive constructive, positive feedback about their work.

Workshops are designed for critics under the age of 30 with proficient skills in written and spoken English. All participants are granted with shared travel and accommodation grants.

Previous participants have gone on to contribute to major international film publications like Screen International, Indiewire, The Hollywood Reporter, Cineuropa and Film New Europe.
