ASC Award for Łukasz Żal for "Cold War" Cinematography





Łukasz Żal received the ASC award granted by the American Association of Cinematographers (ASC) for cinematography for the  ‘Cold War’, co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, directed by Paweł Pawlikowski.

ASC award for theatrical release  

On February 9, the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) announced winners of annual awards for outstanding achievements in the field of cinematography. Łukasz Żal, the cinematographer for “Cold War”, was appreciated in the theatrical release category. Along with the Polish cinematographer the other nominees in this category were Alfonso Cuarón (“Roma”), Matthew Libatique (“A Star Is Born”), Robbie Ryan (“The Favourite”) and Linus Sandgren (“First Man”). The award on behalf of Łukasz Żal was received by Ernest Wilczyński, who was the cameraman at Paweł Pawlikwski’s film.

Another ASC award for Łukasz Żal

This year’s award is another expression of appreciation for the Polish cinematographer. In 2014, Łukasz Żal and Ryszard Lenczewski, authors of cinematography for “Ida” received the ASC Spotlight Award established in the same year for cinematography for  film “Ida”. Its aim is to appreciate films that contribute to the development of cinematography, and have not found a wide distribution in the United States.

ASC awards have been given since 1986. This year, the American Association of Cinematographers celebrates the centenary of its existence.

Oscar® nomination

Łukasz Żal is nominated for the American Film Academy Award this year. This is the second nomination for this award. For the first time Łukasz Żal was nominated together with Ryszard Lenczewski for cinematography about “Ida”. “Cold War” is nominated in three categories: the best director, the best cinematography and the best foreign language film. The winners will be announced on February 24.
