"Charcoal Burners" Awarded in Paris

The Jury of the 1st Semaine du Cinéma de Sciences Po festival, presided by Gilles Jacob, head of the Cannes International Film Festival, unanimously awarded the festival’s Golden Fox grand prize to the documentary student film Smolarze (Charcoal Burners) by Piotr Złotorowicz.

Piotr Złotorowicz’s film previously received awards at film festivals in Pärnu, Zagreb, and at the Poitiers film festival that focuses on labour issues. Smolarze is a day in the life of a group of charcoal burners in Poland’s Bieszczady mountains; a group of men who chose a life away from civilization. The film was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

The Semaine du Cinema film festival is an initiative organized by students of Sciences Po, and was held in Paris between March 28 and April 1. In addition to a short film competition, the festival’s lineup included screenings of Golden Palm award winners from the seven decades of the Cannes Film Festival’s existence.
