Polish documentary film with a chance for an Oscar nomination

On December 17th, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a short list of 15 documentaries that have a chance to be nominated for the Academy Award in the Full Length Documentary Film category. This year’s the only Polish title, which has a chance for nomination, is the full-length documentary debut “Communion” directed by Anna Zamecka. 15 titles have been selected from 166 films. Nominations will be announced on January 22nd. The film promotional campaign is currently underway in the USA. From January 4th, the movie will be screened in selected American cinemas in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York, where most of the screenings are accompanied by Q&A meetings with the director.

The winner of the European Film Award for the European documentary (during the 30th edition of the EFA Awards) was trained at the documentary DOK PRO training at the Wajda School. Thanks to last year’s victory at the Yamagata festival in Japan, the Polish film could be considered in the selection of films that were on the short list.

“Communion”

When adults are playing house, sometimes children need to grow up quickly. 14-year-old Ola takes care of her father and her handicapped brother, and tries to maintain a relationship with her absentee mother. She tries to piece the family back together. She hopes to be able to bring her mother back home. The upcoming holy communion ceremony for Nikodem is a good excuse to meet with their mother; Ola takes the responsibility of organising the perfect family celebration upon herself.

“Communion” finds beauty in the rejected, strength in the weak, and a need for change where nothing seems to point to it. It is an accelerated lesson in growing up that teaches her that no setbacks are final. Especially when it comes to love.

“Communion” is a full-length documentary debut of Anna Zamecka, produced by Otter Films, Wajda Studio and HBO Europe, with a supporting producer of MX35. The document was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. The DoP for the film is Małgorzata Szyłak. Agnieszka Glińska, Anna Zamecka and Wojciech Janas were responsible for the editing. The film entered Polish cinemas on November 25, 2018. Aurora Films is the Polish distributor of “Communion”, CAT & Docs is responsible for the global distribution of the film. The Polish Film Institute supports a promotional campaign related to the chance for an Oscar nomination.
