Marcin Dorociński in Róża (Rosa)

Marcin Dorociński received the Best Actor award at the 43^rd International Film Festival of India in Goa for the role of Tadeusz in Róża (Rosa), a film directed by Wojciech Smarzowski and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Dorociński Wins Best Actor

Róża (Rosa) by Wojciech Smarzowski was one of 15 films screening in Main Competition at the 43^rd edition of the International Film Festival of India. Marcin Dorociński received the Best Actor Award for his performance as Tadeusz. The winner of this year’s festival was the Indian picture Anhey Ghore Da Daan, directed by Gurvinder Singh. One of the members of this year’s Main Competition jury was Polish director Lech Majewski.

Two years ago, the award for Best Actress at the International Film Festival of India went to Magdalena Boczarska for her performance in Różyczka (Little Rose) by Jan Kidawa-Błoński.

Róża (Rosa)

Róża (Rosa) tells the tragic story of the inhabitants of the Masurian lakes region in the days immediately following the Second World War. Tadeusz, a former soldier of the Homeland Army, goes to see Rosa, a widow. Her husband had been a German soldier whose death Tadeusz witnessed. In a land completely destroyed by war, where hope had become an instrument for propaganda, love blossoms between these two people from very distant worlds.

Starring Kulesza and Dorociński

The film’s leading roles are played by Agata Kulesza and Marcin Dorocińśki, with supporting roles by Jacek Braciak, Malwina Buss, Kinga Preis, and Marian Dziędziel. The film was lensed by Piotr Sobociński Jr., and scored by Mikołaj Trzaska. Róża (Rosa) was produced by Warsaw-based WFDiF in co-production with Lightcraft Warsaw and with the “Oko”, “Perspektywa” and “Tor” studios. The film’s Polish distributor is Monolith Films. Róża (Rosa) was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Awards in Gdynia, Warsaw and Tallinn

Smarzowski’s Rosa screened at multiple film festivals in Poland and abroad. The film’s international premiere took place at the 36^th Toronto International Film Festival, and later the film also screened in Busan. Róża (Rosa) has had a number of successes to date: the Grand Prize and Audience Award at the 27^th Warsaw Film Festival; the Best Actor award for Marcin Dorociński and six other awards at the 36^th Gdynia FIlm Festival, as well as special recognition at the 15^th Black Nights IFF in Tallinn. The film was released in Polish theatres on February 3, 2012.

Promoting Polish Films in India

The 43^rd International Film Festival of India in Goa featured a number of Polish elements. Director Krzysztof Zanussi received the Lifetime Achievement Award, while Polish-Indian co-production projects were presented at the FilmBazaar market. The lineup of the Films of the World section of the festival featured Sponsoring (Elles) by Małgorzata Szumowska, Igor i podróż żurawi (Igor and the Cranes’ Journey) by Evgeny Ruman, and Zabić bobra (To Kill a Beaver) by Jan Jakub Kolski. Other festival sections featured W ciemności (In Darkness) by Agnieszka Holland, Droga na drugą stronę (Crulic – The Path to Beyond) by Anca Damian, Wszystkie kobiety Mateusza (All Mateusz’s Women) by Artur Więcek, and the animated feature Jeż Jerzy (Jeż Jerzy: The Movie) by Wojciech Wawszczyk, Jakub Tarkowski, and Tomasz Leśniak.

International Film Festival of India

The International Film Festival of India in Goa is India’s oldest film festival, and one of the oldest in Asia. This year’s edition was a celebration of the 100 years of Indian cinema. This year’s International Film Festival of India ran from November 20 through November 30, 2012.
