Films by Polish Women Directors Shown in Africa

Films by Dorota Kędzierzawska, Magdalena Piekorz, Joanna Kos-Krauze, Teresa Kotlarczyk, and Krystyna Janda will be screened at the International Images Film Festival for Women in Harare, Zimbabwe, starting this weekend.

This will be the eighth edition of the International Images Film Festival for Women in Harare. This event is organized by Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe, an organization established by Tsitsi Dangarembga, a renowned writer from Zimbabwe.

 

This year’s edition of the festival (November 20-28) will include a special section known as Polish Cinema for Women. “This is an unusual place for promoting Polish cinema, but here, in one of the world’s poorest countries, the need for contact with world culture is greater than most anywhere”, says Przemysław Stępień, one of the organizers of the Polish section of the festival.

Audiences will have the opportunity to see eight Polish features and several short animations by female directors of the Animated Film Studio in Poznań.

The films screened in Harare will include Saviour’s Square by Joanna Kos-Krauze and Krzysztof Krauze, Time to Die and Nothing by Dorota Kędzierzawska, Drowsiness by Magdalena Piekorz, Odwiedź mnie we śnie by Teresa Kotlarczyk, Pestka by Krzystyna Janda, and Demakijaż by Maria Sadowska, Dorota Lamparska and Anna Maliszewska. The festival opening film will be Infallible System by Izabela Szylko.

One of the special guests of the festival will be Kazimiera Szczuka, feminist and literary critic. She will preside over the documentary competition jury.

 

The special section on Polish cinema for women was organized bu the Filmgramm Foundation with support from the Polish Film Institute.
