"Happy Afonia" ("Afonia i pszczoły") by Jan Jakub Kolski now in cinemas

The latest film by the master of poetic cinema, Jan Jakub Kolski, transports the viewer to a world where the life of the protagonist, a middle-aged beekeeper named Afonia (Grażyna Błęcka-Kolska), passes slowly in relentless rhythm. Afonia is never without her camera, which she uses to document what she sees as the fascinating world around her.

Her sedentary life is suddenly disturbed by the appearance of a Soviet soldier (Andriej Biełanow). This secretive man begins to fascinate Afonia, a fascination that slowly changes into lust and thens a passionate romance.

Meanwhile, the Russian is ready to do anything to learn the secrets of Afonia’s husband (Mariusz Saniternik), once a famous wrestler and inventor of some excellent wrestling holds, but now an invalid paralysed after an accident.

Other actors in the film include Krzysztof Adamczyk (young Rafał), Zofia Zoń (Anielka), and Wojciech Solarz (Leszek).

The film was produced by Argomedia Production, with support from the Polish Film Institute. Best Film is the distributor.
