"I AM A MURDERER" IN MAIN COMPETITION AT SHANGHAI IFF

Jestem mordercą (I Am a Murderer), a film directed by Maciej Pieprzyca and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, has been selected to screen in Main Competition at the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival.

Jestem mordercą (I Am a Murderer)

Jestem mordercą (I Am a Murderer) is a psychological thriller loosely based on real events that took place in Silesia in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The film’s main protagonist is a young police officer who is put in charge of a task force to catch a serial killer after the initial investigation yields no results.
It is a film about entanglement and moral depravation of an individual who, while acting with good intentions, fails when confronted with their weaknesses, their ambitions, and the social and political system they live in.

Silver Lions in Gdynia

The film had its world premiere at the 41st Gdynia Film Festival, winning the Silver Lions award as well as Best Screenplay and the award of the arthouse and local cinema network (SKSiL).

Cast & Crew

The film was written and directed by Maciej Pieprzyca, lensed by Paweł Dyllus, and produced by RE Studio, with co-producers including the National Audiovisual Institute, Telewizja Polska, Agora S.A., Monternia.pl, and Silesia Film. The film was also co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. Jestem mordercą (I Am a Murderer) features performances by Mirosław Haniszewski, Arkadiusz Jakubik, Magdalena Popławska, Michał Żurawski, and Piotr Adamczyk. Distribution is handled by Next Film.

Polish Films in Shanghai

This year festival’s audicence will have the chance to see such Polish films as: Twój Vincent (Loving Vincent) by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, Powidoki (Afterimage) by Andrzej Wajda and Maria Skłodowska-Curie (Marie Curie. The Courage of Knowledge) by Marie Noelle. During the festival also will be screened Contemporary Polish Short Animations. 

The Shanghai IFF

The Shanghai International Film Festival is the only festival in China to be accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) as an international competitive feature film festival, and is one of the largest film events in Asia.

The festival is divided into four sections: the Golden Goblet competition, film screenings, the film market, and the film forum. The mission of the event is to support the development of world cinema and to discover new directing talent. Since 2004, one of the awards presented in Shanghai has been the annual Asian New Talent Award.

In 2015, the Grand Prize of the Shanghai IFF went to Carte Blanche by Polish director Jacek Lusiński. In 2016, the Main Competition lineup featured Las, 4 rano (Forest, 4AM) by Jan Jakub Kolski.

The 20th Shanghai International Film Festival runs from June 17 through June 26, 2017.
