Kinoteka Stockholm: New Film Festival
Late October and early November will bring the first edition of the Kinoteka interdisciplinary Polish film festival to Stockholm (www.kinoteka.se). The event is organized by the Polish Institute in Stockholm in cooperation with the Polish Film Institute and a number of local partners.
Organized by the Polish Institute in Stockholm, Kinoteka will include a panorama of modern Polish cinema, but also films produced before 1989. Polish films will be screened at several venues in Stockholm (including Kino Sture, Zita and Bio Rio), in partnership with existing festivals (including the FIA Animated Film Festival and Betting on Shorts).
On October 8, Kinoteka will be launched with the screening of the latest film by Xawery Żuławski, Snow White and Russian Red, winner of the Silver Lions at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the director.
Kinoteka Stockholm is divided into three sections:
- Before 1989 – a retrospective of films by Andrzej Wajda, organized in cooperation with the Swedish Film Institute;
- Individualists – the latest films of Poland’s most original filmmakers, including Małgorzata Szumowska, Jerzy Skolimowski and Krzysztof Krauze;
- Experiments – Polish video-art, including films by Karol Radziszewski and Polish animation projects (including the Swedish premiere of The Cinematograph – the latest film by Tomasz Bagiński).
Kinoteka Stockholm will also be home to a grand musical and visual event, uniting DJ Maceo Wyro, silent cinema and Pola Negri, a renowned Polish actress who reached stardom in Hollywood.
Over several weeks of the festival, a number of panel discussions about Polish cinema will be held, including a Polish-Czech-Swedish debate about the conditions for development of independent cinema in Central and Eastern Europe after 1989. The debate will be moderated by Hynka Pallas, one of Sweden’s most prominent film critics.
Kinoteka Stockholm is the Swedish edition of a festival taking place in the United Kingdom under a similar name, organized by the Polish Cultural Institute in London.
The Polish Institute in Stockholm organized this event in cooperation with the Polish Film Institute, Cinemateket, the Stockholm-based FIA Animated Film Festival, Sturebiografen and Zita cinema, among others.
