"Mother Teresa of Cats" by Paweł Sala

Shooting is under way for Mother Teresa of Cats (Matka Teresa od kotów), the feature debut of Paweł Sala. The plot is based on a true story of the murder of a mother by her two sons.

The story covers the 12 months leading up to the murder and the subsequent investigation, up to the moment the youths are arrested. Sala said his film will not concentrate on the deed itself but on the psychological issues, showing the atmosphere of a seemingly typical family home and the environment in which the family lived.

Shooting is taking place in Warsaw’s Praga district, “We will not shock with cruelty or graphic reality,” said producer Sławomir Rogowski, “but nevertheless we will sometimes tell this story using the language of action cinema.”

Actors playing in the film include Ewa Skibińska, Mariusz Bonaszewski, and Ewa Szykulska. The two sons are played by young actors Filip Garbacz, who just won a Special Mention award for Piggies (Świnki) at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, and Mateusz Kościukiewicz. Mikołaj Łebkowski created the cinematography for the film.

The film is scheduled to premiere in 2010. The producer is Zespół Filmowy Rozwój and co-producers are DeLord and Syrena Films. The film received a subsidy from the Polish Film Institute.
