Poles awarded with Cartoon Movie Tributes

There was Polish success with the recent Cartoon Movie Tributes – prizes awarded to outstanding personalities and companies from the world of animation. Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman were named Directors of the Year for their work on the film “Loving Vincent”, while the Polish studio Platige Films, together with its Spanish, Belgian, German and Hungarian partners, was named Producer of the Year for the film “Another Day of Life”, directed by Damian Nenow and Raúl de la Fuente.

Cartoon Movie Tributes

The aim of the Cartoon Movie Tributes is to reward outstanding achievements, companies or personalities who have recently had a positive influence on the animation feature film industry.

All participants attending Cartoon Movie were able to cast their votes in three separate categories: director, distributor and producer of the year.

The awards ceremony took place on 9 March during the Cartoon Forum, where the winners were presented with Cartoon Movie Tributes, a symbol of recognition from their fellow industry professionals.

Loving Vincent

Loving Vincent tells the story in 65,000 hand-painted frames of the life and death of one of the greatest-ever painters – Vincent van Gogh. The plot of the film takes the path of an investigation into the artist’s death, with over 100 of van Gogh’s own paintings being brought to life in the course of the movie.

Another Day of Life

Based on the book by Ryszard Kapuściński, the film is the story of the reporter’s incredibly dangerous journey through Angola in his search for the truth about the war. With the action taking place in the war-torn country in 1975, Kapuściński realises during his journey that he is a witness to events so important that he will have to step outside his role as an observer. This, in turn, will enable him to be reborn both as a writer and as a man.

Formally, it is a stylised animation with excerpts of documentary footage. Through its animation narrative, the film presents a story which took place in the past but it also manages to convey the surrealistic realities of war. The story allowed the filmmakers to take into account the memory of those who survived and to add a layer of reality to the story.

Cartoon Movie

Cartoon Movie is an event for professionals involved in the world of animation. The three-day co-production forum takes the form of a pitching event where filmmakers can present their projects to potentially interested co-producers, distributors and broadcasters. This year’s Cartoon Movie took place from 7-9 March in Bordeaux.
