POLISH ANIMATIONS AT 39th ANNECY IFF

The lineup of this year’s 39th Annecy International Animated Film Festival has been announced, featuring a total of four Polish titles. The Annecy IFF runs from June 15 through June 20.

Annecy: 198 Short Films in Competition

The 39th edition of the Annecy festival saw a record number of 2,606 submissions from 95 countries. 198 short films were selected for screening in the festival’s four competitions and non-competitive sections. At Annecy, films will compete in four categories: short films, television films, commissioned films, and graduation films. Winners will be presented with the Crystal Awards.

Fuga na wiolonczelę, trąbkę i pejzaż (Fugue for Cello, Trumpet and Landscape) at Annecy

This year’s short film competition lineup features Fuga na wiolonczelę, trąbkę i pejzaż (Fugue for Cello, Trumpet and Landscape), the latest film by director Jerzy Kucia, co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. Fugue… will compete against 52 titles from around the world. Since its international premiere at the Hiroshima animated film festival, Jerzy Kucia’s latest film has been in official selection at eight film festival abroad, winning a total of five awards.

The Latest Film by Izabela Plucińska

Izabela Plucińska’s latest film has also been selected for screening in the shorts competition. Her Sexy Laundry (Polish title: Seks dla opornych) is a clay animation story about a couple that has been married for 25 years and is spending a weekend at an obscenely luxurious hotel. The film was made as a co-production between Poland, Germany and Canada. Two year’s ago, the Annecy lineup featured Plucińska’s previous film Darling.

Polish Film in Graduation Film Competition

The graduation film competition will also feature a Polish film. Karolina Specht, author of Nieprawdopodobnie elastyczny człowiek (An Incredibly Elastic Man), which the Annecy audience knows from last year’s edition of the festival, will now show her latest project Nie trać głowy (Don’t Lose Your Head), a 2D animation about how easy it is to lose control of ourselves in today’s world. The Annecy competition screening will mark the international premiere of this film by Karolina Specht, a student at the Łódź Film School.

A Film by Joanna Jasińska-Koronkiewicz in the TV Films Competition

The fourth Polish competition film has been selected for the festival’s television films competition. To pewna wiadomość… (It’s Quite True!), a film directed by Joanna Jasińska-Koronkiewicz and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, was made as part of the ‘Paint Me a Fairy Tale’ series, produced by the Poznań-based TV Studio Filmów Animowanych. Made using the painting technique, this film is a humorous and true story of a certain piece of gossip. With a running time of 13 minutes, the film is an adaptation of a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.

The Annecy IFF is one of the world’s top film festivals for animated films.

‘Polish Animations’ Stand Organized with Support from the Polish Film Institute

This year will once again bring Polish filmmakers and animated film producers to the MIFA film market, which runs concurrently with the festival. For the fifth year running, the Krakow Film Foundation will host the Polish Animations stand, with support from the Polish Film Institute. Thus Poland will once again be one of over 60 countries participating in the film market event.

A complete lineup of films selected for the festival’s feature film competition will be announced in late April.
