Polish cinema fest in New York

Last season’s most interesting Polish films, meetings with filmmakers, and many other attractions are planned for the annual New York Polish Film Festival. The 5th edition of the festival will be held 5-10 May at the Anthology Film Archives and the Museum of Modern Art.

This is the biggest annual event presenting Polish film art on the US East Coast. During its five-year history, the festival has gained great popularity among viewers and has been invited to cooperate with prestigious American cultural institutions.

It is due to the festival organisers that Polish cinema is becoming ever more popular among New York viewers. A month-long retrospective of films by Agnieszka Holland in January attracted thousands of viewers to MoMA, and there were also crowds at the retrospective on Jerzy Skolimowski organised in 2007. Earlier, the festival organised a film season with Elżbieta Czyżewska, études produced by students from Polish film schools, and a Polish animation event.

This year the organisers will broaden the festival programme by including a cycle entitled “Filmy naszych sąsiadów”, presenting films from the former communist countries.

Filmmakers may submit their films through the end of February 2009.
