Polish cinematographer - Wojciech Szepel nominated for BAFTA

Polish cinematographer Wojciech Szepel has been nominated for a BAFTA in the Television Craft Awards section for his work on the British TV drama White Girl.

In Poland, Szepel cooperates with Dariusz Gajewski; he took pictures of Mr. Kuka’s Advice (Lekcje Pana Kuki), Warsaw, and Alarm. Abroad he works mainly in Great Britain and Germany and often cooperates with the BBC and Colonia Media/WDR.

White Girl, a BBC production, traces a clash of cultures involving a family from Leeds who moves to Bradford, where it appears that they are the only white people in the neighbourhood. The story is told from the point of view of a 11-year-old girl named Leah, who becomes friends with her neighbour Yasmin. Leah, at first mildly enchanted with Islam culture, soon becomes fascinated with it. One day the girl returns home wearing a hijab, which has dramatic consequences for the whole family.

Szepel competed against three other artists for the Photography & Lighting Fiction/Entertainment award, which was won at BAFTA’s awards ceremony April 17 by Anthony Dod Mantle for another BBC production, Wallander.
