Polish co-production "Kawki na drodze" (Winter Flies) with awards in Karlovy Vary





Co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, the picture Kawki na drodze (Winter Flies) directed by Olmo Omerzu received two awards at the 53rd International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary. This is Czech-Slovenian-Polish-Slovak production. The film’s Polish producer is Natalia Grzegorzek from Koskino.

Two awards in Karlovy Vary

Olmo Omerzu received the Best Director award. The film, which in the main competition of the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary had its world premiere, also received the award of the Ecumenical Jury for poetic pictures and a story that shows the change of naive dreams and finding new perspectives of life and home.

Kawki na drodze (Winter Flies) is an intimate and subtle road movie about two fourteen-year-olds who roam the Czech Republic by car. A bad policeman and an even worse policewoman try to determine what really happened – what is the origin of the car and what was the purpose of this dangerous journey. The author of the script is Petr Pýcha, and the cinematographer – Lukáš Milota.

Apart from the producer, Natalia Grzegorzek from Koskino, the film also has other Polish accents. The music was composed by Paweł Szamburski, and DI Factory, which is the Polish co-producer, took care of the postproduction of the picture. The film received funding from the Polish Film Institute.

The Polish premiere of the film will take place on July 17th at the Transatlantyk Film Festival in Łódź, where it has been qualified for the New Cinema section.

Olmo Omerzu

Olmo Omerzu is a director born in Slovenia who realizes his films in the Czech Republic. He made his debut in 2011 with the film A night too young, which after a successful premiere at the Forum Berlinale section in 2012 was invited to many international film festivals. It won several dozen awards, including the Czech Film Critics’ Award and the Discovery of the Year. In 2015, Omerzu finished his second feature film Family above all – international co-production with the support of Media and Eurimages funds. It premiered at the International Film Festival in San Sebastian. The film was awarded the prize for the greatest artistic contribution at the International Film Festival in Tokyo and was recognized as the Film of the Year by the Czech Critics.

Polish films in other sections

The Atak paniki (Panic Attack) by Paweł Maślona also took part in the Main Competition. In the East of the West competition, 53 wojny (53 wars) by Ewa Bukowska and Via Carpatia by Klara Kochańska and Kasper Bajon were shown. The other sections showed: Zimna wojna (Cold War) by Paweł Pawlikowski and the Berlin-awarded co-production  Dowlatow (Dovlatov) by Alexei German, jr.

Both films were presented in the prestigious Horizons section, presenting 36 films from the world’s largest festivals.

In the Another View section, showing films of exceptional artistic value, among the 29 productions from around the world three titles co-financed by the Polish Film Institute were presented: Fuga (Fugue) by Agnieszka Smoczyńska, Nina by Olga Chajdas and coproduction Litość (Pity) directed by Babis Makridis. It is worth emphasizing that these films were previously presented and awarded, among others, in Cannes, Rotterdam and the Sundance festival. As a part of the KineDok section, the screening of the document Okupacja 1968 (Occupation 1968) took place. The film consists of five etudes created by five directors from five countries. Each of them creates a separate story told by archives and contemporary pictures. The author of the Polish etude Piszę do ciebie, kochanie (I’m writing to you, my love) is Magdalena Szymków.
