Polish Films at 28th Cottbus Film Festival





Polish cinema is present in almost all sections of the 28th international review of East-European cinema Cottbus Film Festival.

Last year, Polish films won 7 awards at Cottbus, including the main prize for Anna Jadowska’s “Wild Roses”, who  this year will assess the main competition films and present her latest film project at the Connecting Cottbus (CoCo) co-producer market. This year, the festival will begin with the screening of “Cold War” by Paweł Pawlikowski.

“Via Carpatia” by Klara Kochańska and Kasper Bajon will fight for the Lubina statue (which means ‘charming’ in Sorbian) on the Feature Films Competition, the most important category of the festival.  The premiere of the film took place at the Karlovy Vary festival, and on November 23rd the film will be shown in Polish cinemas (Spectator distribution). The competition will also be attended by the international co-production “Ayka” by Sergei Dvorcevoy, awarded at Cannes. Both films are co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. In the Short Film Competition, Poland will be represented by the film “60 Kilos of Nothing” by Piotr Domalewski.

During the U18 Youth Cinema Competition we will see for the first time films awarded at the Zielona Góra Amateur Films Review organized by the Krzysztof Kieslowski 5th High School in Zielona Góra – a school with which Cottbus  Film Festival  cooperates, among others, in the organization of film workshops for young people, and from which come Polish members of the tri-national jury assessing films in the young cinema category. Films “A New Dimension the Dream”, “Road of the Rustling Trees” and “Where Is the Love” shot by high school students will be shown alongside with, among others, “A Coach’s Daughter” by Łukasz Grzegorzek,  “Tremors” by Dawid Bodzak, “Be Prepared” by Robert Gliński, “Back Home” by Magdalena Łazarkiewicz or “Winter Flies”  by Olmo Omerzu.

In the Polish Horizons section you will see, among others, “Hurly-Burly” by Kuba Czekaj, “Dust” and “Sweet Home Czyżewo” by Jakub Radej, “On the Run” by Beata Dzianowicz. The program of the Regio: Silesia section will include films focused on topics related to the region of Upper Silesia. Polish films will also appear in the Friend As Enemy section. In the Hits section, Paweł Pawlikowski’s “Cold War” and “Panic Attack” by Paweł Maślona will be shown. In the section devoted to family films, a short animation of Andrzej Piotr Morawski’s “Small Tales” will be shown. Among the events accompanying the festival were, among others, exhibition of works of the Polish poster school, works of Przemek Matecki and Ganslmeier photography, which can be seen in the Brandenburgisches Landesmuseum für moderne Kunst in Cottbus until November 18, 2018.
