"Rosa": World Premiere in Toronto

Róża (Rosa) by Wojciech Smarzowski will screen at the 36^th Toronto International Film Festival in the Contemporary World Cinema section, alongside Terre outragée (Land of Oblivion) by Michale Boganim. Both films were co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. Rosa’s screening at the Toronto IFF will mark the film’s world premiere.

Róża (Rosa) focuses on the dramatic story of the inhabitants of the Masurian lakes region in the period immediately following the Second World War. Considered by communist authorities to be second-class citizens and supporters of Nazis, they were subject to repression.

For his role in Rosa, Marcin Dorociński received the Best Leading Actor award at this year’s 36^th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, while the film itself won six other awards in Gdynia. Other notable cast names include Agata Kulesza, Jacek Braciak, Malwina Buss, Kinga Preis, and Marian Dziędziel. Piotr Sobociński Jr. was director of photography, while the score was composed by Mikołaj Trzaska.

The film was produced by WFDiF, in co-production with Lightcraft Warsaw and “Oko”, “Perspektywa”, and “Tor” Film Studios. The film’s Polish distributor is Monolith Films.

Rosa by Wojciech Smarzowski is one of six films supported by the Polish Film Institute that will screen at this year’s Toronto IFF. Others are international co-productions: W ciemności (In Darkness) by Agnieszka Holland, Sponsoring (Elles) by Małgorzata Szumowska, Latająca maszyna (The Flying Machine) by Geoff Lindsey, Martin Clapp, and Marek Skrobecki, Kobieta z piątej dzielnicy (The Woman in the Fifth) by Paweł Pawlikowski, and Terre outragée (Land of Oblivion) by Michale Boganim.

Rosa is set for theatrical release in Poland in January 2012.

The 36^th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 8 through September 18, 2011.
