The Kinematograph Closer to an Oscar

The Kinematograph by Tomasz Bagiński is among ten films shortlisted for one of five nominations for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. Bagiński has previously been nominated for an Oscar in the same category for his film The Cathedral.

Besides The Kinematograph, other shortlisted pictures include The Cat Piano, French Roast, Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty, The Lady and the Reaper (La Dama y la Muerte), Logorama, A Matter of Loaf and Death, Partly Cloudy, Runaway and Variete.

The Kinematograph was produced by Platige Image. It is an adaptation of a comic strip by Mateusz Skutnik from his album Rewolucje: Monochrom, telling the story of Francis, the creator of an invention that can change the world.

The twelve-minute animation premiered in September 2009 at the 34th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. A few days earlier it had its international premiere, being shown in the short film competition at the 66th Venice International Film Festival.

The list of Academy Award nominations will be announced on February 2, 2010. The awards ceremony will be held on March 7 in Los Angeles.
