"THE LURE" WINS IN PORTO

Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s debut feature Córki Dancingu (The Lure) triumphed at the 36th Fantasporto International Film Festival, winning a total of three awards: Best Film, Best Director, and Best Special Effects.

Córki Dancingu (The Lure) Wins Three Awards

The festival jury members Ate de Jong, Romain Basset, Drew Casson, Marc Carreté and Mark Murphy found Córki Dancingu (The Lure) to be an intriguing directing debut and considered it one of the best films of this year’s Sundance film festival. The jury also recognized Smoczyńska’s directing craft, and the film’s special effects, some of which were made by Platige Image.

A Coming-of-Age Story

Córki Dancingu (The Lure) is a coming-of-age story about two girls on the brink of becoming women. They arrive in Warsaw as teenagers and leave the city as mature women who have faced suffering, love, and passion.

Teenagers Silver and Golden find themselves in the middle of the world of 1980s Warsaw dance parties, vibrant with music, glittering with neon lights and sequins. But these are no ordinary girls; they are mermaids, trying to figure out what it means to be a woman in the world they live in. They join the musicians of the Figs and Dates band, becoming an instant sensation of the city’s nightlife. In the throes of love and budding passions, they briefly forget their true nature. But one broken heart is all it takes for the situation to slip out of control.

Awards

Co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, Córki Dancingu (The Lure) has enjoyed great reception at this year’s Sundance film festival, winning the Special Jury Award for Unique Vision and Design in the World Dramatic Cinema Competition.

The makers of this film had also previously received acclaim at the 40th Gdynia Film Festival, where Agnieszka Smoczyńska received the award for Best Directing Debut and the ELLE Crystal Star, while Janusz Kaleja and Tomasz Matraszek received the award for Best Make-Up.

Fantasporto

This year marked the 36th edition of the Fantasporto International Film Festival. Originally dedicated to science fiction and fantasy, the festival later broadened its scope to include thriller and horror movies. This year’s edition of Fantasporto ran from February 26 through March 5.
