"Winter Flies" Awarded With The Six Czech Lions





The film “Winter Flies” co-financed by the Polish Film Institute directed by Olmo Omerzu on Saturday 23 March won six Czech Lions – the most important film awards in the Czech Republic, including the best film. In addition, the film was also awarded for directing, script, editing and supporting roles. “Winter Flies” is a Czech-Slovenian-Polish-Slovak production. The Polish film producer is Natalia Grzegorzek from Koskino.

Another awards for the film

The film, which in the main competition at the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary had its world premiere, received the award for the best directing, as well as the award of the Ecumenical Jury for poetic pictures and history that shows the change of naive dreams and finding new perspectives in life. The international premiere of the film took place at the Toronto festival, it was also the last year’s Czech candidate for the Oscar.

“Winter Flies”

“Winter Flies” is a subtle road cinema with two fourteen-year-olds who ride the Czech Republic by car. A bad policeman and an even worse policewoman try to determine what really happened – what is the origin of the car and what was the purpose of this dangerous journey. The author of the script is Petr Pýcha, and the photographs – Lukáš Milota. In addition to the producer, the film also has other Polish accents. The music was composed by Paweł Szamburski, and DI Factory, which is the Polish co-producer, took care of the postproduction of the image. Karolina Błażejczak is responsible for the translation of dialogues into Polish. The film received funding from the Polish Film Institute. The Polish premiere of the film took place in July during the Transatlantyk Film Festival in Łódź, where it  qualified for the New Cinema section. It will hit cinemas in Poland this summer. Olmo Omerzu is a director born in Slovenia who realizes his films in the Czech Republic. He made his film debut in 2011 with the film “A Night Too Young”, which after a successful premiere in the Forum section at Berlinale in 2012, was invited to many international film festivals. He won several dozen awards, including the Czech Film Critics’ Award and the Discovery of the Year. In 2015, Omerzu finished his second feature film “Family Film” – international co-production supported by Media and Eurimages funds. It premiered at the International Film Festival in San Sebastian. It was awarded the prize for the greatest artistic contribution at the Tokyo International Film Festival, and it was recognized as the Film of the Year by the Czech Critics.
