Nine Polish Films in Karlovy Vary

Nine Polish films will screen at the 47th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which runs from June 29 through July 7, 2012. Seven of these, including several films co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, will screen in the festival’s competition sections.

Main Competition

The lineup of this year’s Main Competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival features two Polish films: Zabić bobra (To Kill a Beaver) by Jan Jakub Kolski (the film received support from the Polish Film Institute), and the Polish-Czech co-production Polski film by Marek Najbrt, co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. Najbrt was the winner of the third edition of the Off Plus Camera film festival, receiving the award of the Polish Film Institute – one million PLN towards the production of his next film project in Poland.

East of the West – Films in Competition

 

Two Polish films will screen in the East of the West competition, which showcases first and second films by directors from Eastern European countries. The two Polish films are Yuma by Piotr Mularuk, and Bez wstydu (Shameless) by Filip Marczewski, which premiered in the Polish Film Competition at the 37th Gdynia Film Festival. Both films were co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Forum of Independents

 

W sypialni (In the Bedroom), the feature debut by Tomasz Wasilewski, will screen in the Forum of Independents competition. This film also screened in the Polish Film Competition at the 37th Gdynia Film Festival. At the 30th ‘Young and Cinema’ Festival in Koszalin, the film’s leading lady Katarzyna Herman received the Amber Award for Best Actress for her performance. The Forum of Independents features independent films from around the world, awarding the Independent Camera Award to the competition winner.

Documentary Competition

 

Two Polish films will also screen in the Karlovy Vary documentary competition – Kichot, a short student film directed by Jagoda Szelc, a fifth-year student at the National Film School in Łódź, and Polish Illusions, a feature documentary by Jacob Dammas and Helge Renner, co-financed by the Polish Film Institute and made as a co-production between Poland, Germany, Denmark, and France.

Other Sections

 

Another View, a Karlovy Vary section that focuses on films revealing an original creative approach, will feature Baby są jakieś inne (Man, Chicks Are Just Different) by Marek Koterski. The Czech Films section, showcasing films made in 2011 and 2012, will feature Konfident by Juraj Nvota, a co-production between Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Both films wee co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Works in Progress 2012

 

Every year, producers present the latest feature production from Central and Eastern Europe. This presentation designed for international distributors, sales agents, and festival programmers will offer a selection of quality feature films, recently completed or in post-production, whose premieres are expected after July 2012.

Docu Talents from the East

 

Docu Talents from the East 2012 will introduce the most remarkable creative documentary projects from Central and Eastern Europe that are currently in the production or post-production stage. The presentation is organized by the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Works in Progress 2011

 

Three of the Polish films screening at the 47th Karlovy Vary Festival – Bez wstydu (Shameless) by Filip Marczewski (working title: Kamfora), Zabić bobra (To Kill a Beaver) by Jan Jakub Kolski, and Konfident by Juraj Nvota – were previously shown at Karlovy Vary’s “Works in Progress” presentation in 2011.

Karlovy Vary Awards for Films Supported by the Polish Film Institute

Polish films screened at various previous editions of the Karlovy Vary festival, winning a number of awards. In 2005, Krzysztof Krauze received the Crystal Globe grand prize for his feature Mój Nikifor (My Nikifor). Krystyna Feldman, star of Mój Nikifor, received the award for Best Actress.

 

Several films co-financed by the Polish Film Institute also received recognition in Karlovy Vary. In 2009, Filip Garbacz was given specjal mention of the jury for his performance in Świnki (Piggies) by Robert Gliński. In 2010, Mateusz Kościukiewicz and Filip Garbacz shared the Best Actor award for their performances in Paweł Sala’s Matka Teresa od kotów (Mother Teresa of Cats). In 2011, the grand prize in the Documentary Film Competition went to Deklaracja nieśmiertelności (The Declaration of Immortality), directed by Marcin Koszałka.

 

The 47th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival runs from June 29 through July 7, 2012.
