„Other People” and „The Moths” with awards at the Tallinn Festival

The film „Other People” by Aleksandra Terpińska, co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, received the FIPRESCI award from the International Federation of Film Critics at the Tallinn Black Nights festival. „The Moths” by Piotr Stasik won the Rebels With A Cause competition. The 25th edition of the festival was held on November 12-28 in Tallinn and Tartu, Estonia.

Tallinn Black Nights Festival, organized since 1997, is one of the largest in Northern Europe. It has also become a popular industry platform for the region, hosting up to 1,000 guests and delegates as well as over 160 journalists. During its duration, about 250 feature films are screened, as well as over 300 short films and animations. Every year it is visited by 80,000 people. Along with such festivals as Berlinale, Cannes, Venice or Locarno, it belongs to the group of „international competition festivals” (formerly „ A category”).

In addition to the awarded titles, the program of the festival also included the production of Konrad Aksinowicz „Return to those days” (Just Film competition), „Love tasting” by David Nickel (Youth Program), co-productions „Kitoboy” by Filip Jurjew and „Lamb” by Valdimar. Jóhansson (Discovery Showcase), „Even mice belong to  heaven” by Denisa Grimmova and Jan Bubenička (Children’s Competition Program), as well as „Leave no traces” by Jan P. Matuszyński (Current Waves) and the documentary „Anti hero” dir. Michał Kawecki (non-competition screening).

„Other people”

Aleksandra Terpińska’s feature debut was presented in Tallinn among 20 productions in the First Feature Competiton section. It was the international premiere of a production based on the book by Dorota Masłowska. „Other People” previously received three awards at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia – for directing debut, male lead role and editing. The premiere in Polish cinemas is scheduled for March 18, 2022.

In the description of the film we read: At first glance, Kamil and Iwona have nothing to do with each other. Iwona is Maciek’s bored and unhappy wife, living in luxury on credit. Kamil is 32 years old, has a sexy girl Anecia, but still lives with his mother in a block of flats, dreaming up a rapper’s career and catching random jobs. The relationship with Iwona is seemingly irrelevant, but thanks to her, both of them will see their life choices and people in a different light.

 „Moths”

The image „Moths” is also the feature debut of the documentary filmmaker Piotr Stasik and the first micro-budget film to be presented in a competition at an international competition festival. He was included in the Rebels With A Cause section, which shows images that „set new directions of narration in world cinematography.”

The movie „Moths” tells about the events at the colony for teenage players, during which participants fall into a trance and are unable to end the game. Then their educators cut off their internet, which becomes the beginning of events in which the creator explores the boy’s consciousness and subconsciousness through choreography, dance and a group process.
