"Our Curse" Wins in Lisbon

Nasza klątwa (Our Curse), a documentary film directed by Tomasz Śliwiński and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, received the audience award at the 11th Indielisboa Film Festival in Portugal.

Audience Award in Lisbon

The award in Portugal is the second international award for Tomasz Śliwiński’s graduation film, produced at the Warsaw Film School. The film previously received an award at the Aspen short film festival. Nasza klątwa (Our Curse) also received a number of awards in Poland, including the T-Mobile New Horizons festival in Wrocław and the Short Waves festival in Poznań.

According to the website of the T-Mobile New Horizons festival, “[t]he film is the director’s personal statement about the battle he and his wife must endure in facing the untreatable and very rare disease of their newborn child – the Ondine’s Curse (CCHS) […]. People affected with this disease stop breathing during sleep and require lifelong respirator support. The film documents the process of dealing with the fear stemming from the illness and the way the couple attempts to provide their son with a normal happy childhood.”

Polish Presence in Other Festival Sections

The festival’s short film competition also screened La Isla (The Island), a Polish-Chilean co-production directed by Katarzyna Klimkiewicz and Dominga Sotomayor. The film was developed within the framework of the DOX:LAB programme of Copenhagen’s CPH.DOX festival, which fosters cooperation between filmmakers from around the world. The Island is the story of a family reunion on a remote island; a reunion that creates an opportunity for reminiscing.
