"Papusza" Awarded in Uruguay

Papusza by Joanna Kos-Krauze and Krzysztof Krauze has received another festival award. Papusza, co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, received the ACCU/FIPRESCI Award for Best Foreign Film at the 32nd Uruguay International Film Festival.

Papusza Wins Best Foreign Film

The ACCU/FIPRESCI jury members Andrés Caro Berta, Gonzalo Sobral and Sebastián Sánchez selected Papusza by Joanna Kos-Krauze and Krzysztof Krauze as the best film in the festival’s international competition. The Polish feature was recognized for its “visual strength and narrative tension that successfully tell the story of the Romani community, so often marginalized and persecuted.”

Youth Jury Award for Best Film

In addition to the ACCU/FIPRESCI Prize, Papusza also received the Best Film award of the youth jury. As youth jury members Juan Manuel Fábregas, Martín de Benedetti and María Pía Lauría said in the jury statement: “We wanted to award this film for its unique cinematography and seamless combination of technology and aesthetics, which created a memorable narrative.”

SIGNIS Award

The SIGNIS (World Catholic Association for Communication) jury members Carla Lima, Clara Panelles and Magdalena Perandones awarded Papusza for its “respectful look at the Romani culture and for presenting an unorthodox character who is a remarkable individual against all odds.”

At the 32nd Festival Cinematográfico Internacional del Uruguay Papusza also received the Audience Award.
