Polish Animations at 38th Annecy IFF

The 38th Annecy International Animated Film Festival runs from June 9 through June 14. The festival’s several sections will feature films co – financed by the Polish Film Institute. 

Short Film Competition

Two films by Polish animation artists are among the 55 titles selected for screening in the festival’s Short Film Competition: Ex Animo by Wojciech Wojtkowski and Hipopotamy (Hippos) by Piotr Dumała (both films were co-financed by the Polish Film Institute and produced by Piotr Furmankiewicz, Mateusz Michalak and FUMI Studio).

Graduation Films and Out of Competition Section

This year’s hand-picked selection of 56 animated graduation films from around the world features two Polish projects: Gruby i Chudy by Aleksandra Brożyna (Łódź Film School, FUMI Studio) and Nieprawdopodobnie elastyczny człowiek by Karolina Specht (Łódź Film School). The out of competition showcase of short films features Łaźnia, a film by Tomek Ducki. Last year’s edition of the Annecy film festival featured a special focus on Poland.

Polish Films Awarded in Annecy

The Annecy festival is one of the most prestigious events in the world of animated filmmaking. Last year’s edition of the festival featured over 500 films from around the world. Recent editions of the festival have brought several awards for films co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

In 2007, Piotruś i wilk (Peter & the Wolf) by Suzie Templeton won the festival’s Grand Prize. In 2012, the Grand Prix in the animated feature competition went to Droga na drugą stronę (Crulic – the Path to Beyond), a Polish-Romanian co-production directed by Anca Damian. The 2011 edition of the festival brought awards for a total of three Polish animated films: Świteź (The Lost Town of Świteź) by Kamil Polak (Best First Film), Paths of Hate by Damian Nenow (special recognition) and Maska (Mask) by the Quay Brothers (the Sacem award for original music composed by Krzysztof Penderecki). In 2013, Ab Ovo by Anita Kwiatkowska-Naqvi received the award for Best Graduation Film.
