Polish Documentaries in Sheffield

The 20th Sheffield Doc/Fest runs from June 7 through June 12. The festival’s competition lineup features two films co-financed by the Polish Film Institute: Joanna by Aneta Kopacz and Nasza klątwa (Our Curse) by Tomasz Śliwiński. Festival guests will include a group of Polish producers, invited to pitch their latest projects.

Films Co-Financed by the Polish Film Institute in Sheffield Doc/Fest Lineup

Organized annually since 1994, the Sheffield Doc/Fest is the United Kingdom’s largest documentary film festival. This year’s edition features two Polish films in its lineup. Joanna by Aneta Kopacz will screen in the Euro Docs section, which showcases a selection of the best European films of the year. Tomasz Śliwiński’s Nasza klątwa (Our Curse) will screen in the Short Docs section that focuses on recent short films.

Co-Production Forum

The festival also features the Sheffield Marketplace that serves as both a film market and co-production forum. This year’s event will be attended by the Polish Docs Delegation, organized by the Krakow Film Foundation and supported by the Polish Film Institute, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and the Polish Cultural Institute in London. After the selection process was completed, representatives of the following production companies were invited to participate in the Delegation:

  • Wajda Studio, project entitled “Ostatni miejski kowboj” (The Last Urban Cowboy), directed by Paweł Ziemilski;
  • Studio Filmowe Kronika, project entitled “Na dnie morza” (At the Bottom of the Sea), directed by Marcin Sauter; 
  • Endorfina Studio, project entitled “Życie motyla” (The Life of a Butterfly), directed by Piotr Bernaś;
  • Balabusta, project entitled “AGFA 1939”, directed by Michał Wnuk;
  • ZK Studio, project entitled “Walka z szatanem” (The Battle with Satan), directed by Konrad Szołajski;
  • Pokromski Studio, project entitled “Ethiopiques. Bunt duszy” (Ethiopiques. Revolt of the Soul), directed by Maciej Bochniak;
  • Arkana Studio, project entitled “Antonio w Radomiu” (Antonio in Radom), directed by Jerzy Śladkowski;
  • Centrala, project entitled “Mnich z morza” (Monk from the Sea), directed by Rafał Skalski;
  • Ragusa Film, project entitled “Świetlica” (Common Room), directed by Dariusz Kowalski;
  • Lava Films, project entitled “21xNowy Jork” (21xNew York), directed by Piotr Stasik

These producers will have an opportunity to present their film projects to a wide spectrum of international film experts and hold meetings with potential co-producers and financiers. Endorfina Studio’s “Życie motyla” (The Life of a Butterfly) also qualified to screen at the prestigious Meet Market pitching session.

The Polish Docs Delegation is coordinated by the Krakow Film Foundation.
