Polish Documentaries Win in Estonia

Abu Haraz, Przywódcy (Leaders), Ojciec i syn (Father and Son), and Ojciec i syn w podróży (Father and Son on a Journey) are among the winners of this year’s Pärnu International Documentary and Anthropology Film Festival.

Polish Documentaries Among Festival Winners

Of the eight awarded films, four were produced in Poland. Estonia’s Pärnu International Documentary and Anthropology Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the country. This year’s edition of the festival ran from July 14 through July 27.

Award for Abu Haraz

Abu Haraz, a documentary by Maciej Drygas, received the award for Best Film on Survival of Indigenous People. Abu Haraz tells the story of the residents of a small village in the deserts of Northern Sudan, whose livelihood is endangered by the construction of a water dam. The film portrays the clash of local traditions with the progress of civilization.

Award for Best Self-Portrayal

The double award for Best Self-Portrayal went to Ojciec i syn (Father and Son) by Paweł Łoziński and Ojciec i syn w podróży (Father and Son on a Journey) by Marcel Łoziński. Both films have screened at multiple film festivals in Poland and abroad. In 2013, the two films received the Silver Horn double award for best feature-length documentary film at the Krakow Film Festival.

Przywódcy (Leaders) Voted Best Children’s Film

Paweł Ferdek’s political thriller for children Przywódcy (Leaders) received an award in the Best Film for Kids category. The film previously screened in the new section for elementary school students at this year’s Planete+Doc festival.
