Polish Films at Moscow IFF

Six Polish feature and documentary films are in the lineup of the 33^rd edition of the Moscow International Film Festival that will run this year from June 23 through July 2.

Joanna by Feliks Falk and W imieniu diabła (In the Name of the Devil) by Barbara Sass will screen in Main Competition. The Moscow screenings will mark both films’ international premieres. This year’s competition will be judged by jury members Geraldine Chaplin, Amos Gitai, Kinolay Dostal, Károly Makk, and Javier Martín-Domínguez.

The “Free Thought” documentary film section will include Deklaracja nieśmiertelności (The Declaration of Immortality) by Marcin Koszałka na Kawałek lata (A Piece of Summer) by Marta Minorowicz. The out-of-competition section “8½” features Młyn i krzyż (The Mill and the Cross) by Lech Majewski.

The Moscow IFF will also feature a special screening of Miasto ruin (City of Ruins), a 3D digital reconstruction of the destruction of Warsaw, made by Platige Image.

The Moscow International Film Festival is considered to be one of the world’s top annual film events. The festival’s first edition was held in 1935. Last year’s festival screenings had a total of over 200,000 admissions. The festival’s longterm head is Russian actor and director Nikita Mikhalkov.

Two Polish films received awards at last year’s edition of the Moscow IFF. Jan Kidawa-Błoński received the Silver St. George award for Best Director for his feature Różyczka (Little Rose), while Rewers (Reverse) by Borys Lankosz was voted best film in the “Perspectives” section of the festival.
