Polish films awarded at the festival in Trieste

Co-financed by the Polish Film Institute „Sweat” by Magnus von Horn received Cineuropa Award at the 32 nd Trieste Film Festival. The best in shorts was„Beyond is the day” directed by Damian Kocur.

The winner of Silver Lions at the last Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, took also part in the festivals in Göteborg (the Church of Sweden’s Angelos Award for Magnus von Horn) and Rotterdam. In 2020, „Sweat” won the main award in the International Feature Film Competition (Gold Hugo) at the 56th Chicago International Film Festival, appears in the official selection of the 73rd Cannes festival and received a special TIFF Industry Selects label in Toronto. Film by Magnus von Horna, instead of Silver Lions, received also five individual prizes at the 45th Polish Film Festival, which were awarded for directing (Magnus von Horn), cinematography (Michał Dymek), editing (Agnieszka Glińska), main female role (Magdalena Koleśnik) and supporting female role (Aleksandra Konieczna).

Film is about three days out of life of fitness motivator Sylwia Zając, whose presence on social media has made her a celebrity. Although she has hundreds of thousands of followers, is surrounded by loyal employees and admired by acquaintances, her life lacks true intimacy.

Cast and crew

Magdalena Koleśnik is the leading role, whose partners are: Julian Świeżewski, Aleksandra Konieczna and Zbigniew Zamachowski.

The cinematographer is Michał Dymek, PSC editor – Agnieszka Glińska, PSC sound – Michał Robaczewski, original music – Piotr Kurek, artistic managemant – Jagna Dobesz, costumes – Małgorzata Fudala, make-up – Agnieszka Sasim and production manager is Anna Pachnicka. The producer of the film is Mariusz Włodarski from Lava Filmsin in co-production with Zentropa Sweden and Film i Väst, Canal+, EC1 Lodz The City of Culture, Opus Film DI Factory. Associate producers are Sophie Erbs and Tom Dercourt from Cinema Defacto.

„Beyond is the day”

Earlier on, the film won Osiride Brovedani Foundation Award for Best Short Film at the 32nd Trieste Film Festival. It was awarded with Silver Hobby-Horse for the best short fiction film at the 60th Krakow Film Festival, Special Jury Prize in the Short Film Competition at the 45th Festival Polish Film Festival in Gdynia and the Grand Prix of the Short Films Competition at the WAMA Film Festival in Olsztyn. It took part also in the International Competition of the 43rd Festival International du Court Métrage de Clermont-Ferrand in France, where was awarded with the Best European Film Award.

„Beyond is the day” tells the story of Paweł, a lonely man who works on a small river ferry near his village. He spends most of his time transporting villagers to the other side of the river. Although Paweł is famous in the area, he spends every single day alone. One day, he notices that someone is trying to swim across the river. That person is Mohammad, the illegal immigrant. Paweł decides to help and hides him, finally having someone he can talk to.

Filmmakers of the film

Damian Kocur is responsible for the cinematography for the film, Paweł Laskowski and Damian Kocur for editing, set design was designed by Kamila Pściuk-Glazer while Małgorzata Zabłocka made costumes. Sound design is by Jakub Jerszyński, but Wojciech Skrzypczyński was the production manager of the film. The producers of the film are Damian Kocur from Tomcat and Michał Sadowski from Kinghouse.
