Polish Films in Göteborg

The lineup of the 37th Göteborg International Film Festival, starting on January 24, features several films co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. The festival will also screen a retrospective of animated films by Polish filmmaker Jerzy Kucia.

The ‘Masters’ Section

One of 17 films set for screening in the section dedicated to showcasing films by the masters of the art of filmmaking is Venus in Fur, the latest film by Roman Polański, co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Documentary and Short Films

The lineup of a total of 18 documentary films set for screening in Göteborg includes two films by Polish documentary filmmakers: Czasem śnię, że latam (Sometimes I Dream I’m Flying) by Aneta Popiel-Machnicka and The Man Who Made Angels Fly by Wiktoria Szymańska. The festival’s short film section features The Big Leap, a film by Kristoffer Rus.

HBTQ and Roma Bilder

Among the nine films screening in the festival’s HBTQ section are two Polish productions: Małgorzata Szumowska’s W imię… (In the Name Of…) and Tomasz Wasilewski’s Płynące wieżowce (Floating Skyscrapers). The Roma Bilder section (dedicated to films about the Romani community) will screen a total of five films, including Papusza by Joanna Kos-Krauze and Krzysztof Krauze. All three films were co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

A Retrospective and Master Class by Jerzy Kucia

The lineup of the Göteborg festival also features a retrospective of animated works by Polish filmmaker Jerzy Kucia. The selection of seven titles includes such films as Strojenie instrumentów (Tuning Instruments; 2000), Parada (Parade; 1986) and Wiosna (The Spring; 1980). A Q&A session and master class with Jerzy Kucia is scheduled for January 28.
