Polish Films in Istanbul

Several films co-financed by the Polish Film Institute are featured in the lineup of the Istanbul International Film Festival, which runs from March 30 through April 14, 2013.

Films Supported by the Polish Film Institute in Festival Lineup

The ‘From the World of Festivals’ section will feature two films co-financed by the Polish Film Institute: Imagine by Andrzej Jakimowski and W imię… (In the Name Of…) by Małgorzata Szumowska. The section called ‘Film Programme of the 13th Istanbul Contemporary Art Biennale’ (which takes place in the autumn of 2013) will feature the film Włosy by Agnieszka Polska, which premiered during the ‘Autoryt’ exhibition at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw.

Małgorzata Szumowska Among Jury Members

Małgorzata Szumowska will be one of the members of the festival’s main competition jury, led by Peter Weir.

Meetings on the Bridge

The festival will also mark the eighth edition of the ‘Meetings on the Bridge’ industry event. Its head Gülin Üstun participated in the Script&Pitch workshop, co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, which were organized in Krakow by TorinoFilmLab.

Turkey Meets Poland

On April 9, 2013, the Polish Film Institute along with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and the Consulate of Poland in Istanbul will organize the “Turkey Meets Poland” panel discussion within the framework of the ‘Meetings on the Bridge’. The goal of this event is to present opportunities for Polish-Turkish co-production after the launch of the Turkish fund for supporting minority co-productions.

The panel, organized to commemorate the 600th anniversary of Polish-Turkish relations, which will be celebrated in 2014, will be attended by representatives of the Polish Film Institute, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, Polish film schools, producer Ewa Puszczyńska of Opus Film, as well as representatives of the General Directorate for Cinematography of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey.

Istanbul IFF

The Istanbul International Film Festival has been organized annually since 1982. In its early days, it was part of the Film Week, but as of 1984 it has become an independent event. Two years ago, the international competition at Istanbul featured Wszystko, co kocham (All That I Love) by Jacek Borcuch. Last year, Istanbul audiences had the opportunity to see eight Polish films, including Róża (Rosa) by Wojciech Smarzowski, W ciemności (In Darkness) by Agnieszka Holland, and Wymyk (Courage) by Greg Zgliński. In 1986, Radosław Piwowarski’s Yesterday received the festival’s grand prize – the Golden Tulip award.
